While ‘live’ bell ringing is suspended for a while, you can still enjoy the wonderful sound of the bells at St Michael’s, as they will be featured on BBC Radio 4’s Bells on Sunday on March 22nd.
Tune in at 5:43am, or if that’s a bit too early for you, you can listen online afterwards:
Please note that following today’s government advice regarding Coronavirus, we have taken the decision to suspend all ringing activity with immediate effect at St Mary’s, St Michaels and Bitterne Park, until further notice.
We have an extensive programme of ringing planned on Sunday to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the first world war.
To begin we will ring the bells half-muffled at St Michael’s from 09:45 to 10:30 for the morning service.
Then we will remove the muffles and ring the bells ‘open’ for a quarter-peal attempt from 12:30 to 13:30, joining ringers across the country to celebrate the anniversary of the end of the war.
After this we will be ringing at St Mary’s from 14:30 to 15:15 and then finally we will ring at The Ascension, Bitterne Park from 16:00 to 16:45.
And finally, be sure to watch Songs of Praise on BBC One at 13:45, which this week comes from St Michael’s, Southampton and features a brief clip of us ringing!!
The Southampton City Ringers and friends marked St George’s day today with two quarter peals successfully scored in the city.
1282 Cambridge Surprise Royal was rung at St Michael’s first followed by 1280 Bristol Surprise Royal at St Mary’s afterwards.
Both quarter peals can be viewed on BellBoard;

Well done to all those who took part in marking this special day!
Listen out for the bells of St Michael’s Southampton which will be ringing out today for the Southampton Heritage Open Day. 10am to 10.30am and then again from 1pm to 1.30pm.
If any ringers are in the area feel free to join us!
We have decided to move a few practices around this month:
On Monday 9th November the practice has moved to St Mary’s, we will be ringing half-muffled to mark Armistice Day which is on the Wednesday of that week.
On Monday 16th November the practice will be at Bitterne Park as normal.
On Monday 23rd November there will be no practice, we will probably have a social event instead.
On Monday 30th November the practice will be at St Michael’s.
The normal schedule will resume at the beginning of December, watch the calendar on the home page for further updates.
As the Southampton Boat Show will be in full swing next week and parking will probably be even more limited than usual in the city centre, we have swapped the practice locations as follows:
Monday 14th September: St Mary’s
Monday 28th September: St Michael’s
The practice on Monday 21st September will stay at Bitterne Park as normal, and Sunday service ringing is also unaffected.
Details and photos of all peal boards that are hung in St Michael’s and St Mary’s churches in Southampton are now available to view on the website.
They can be found in the following locations (click heading to be taken there)

Due to changes of service times at The Ascension, Bitterne Park from the 4th May, we have had to revise our ringing schedule accordingly. We shall now only ring at one tower a week, rotating between our three towers: The first three weeks will therefore be:
4th May – St Mary’s – 9.45am – 10.30am
11th May – St Michael’s – 9.45am – 10.30am
18th May – The Ascension – 10.00am – 10.45am
Then back to St Mary’s for the 25th May
The ringing calendar will be updated shortly.
Please note that Sunday Service Ringing on Sunday 8/12/2013 will take place at ST MARY’S church, not St Michael’s as previously advertised. This is for a confirmation service, which includes some of the young members of our band.
